The Switch To action allows a file that results from completed actions to be used as the target for subsequent actions. An example is below.
In this case:

The Trigger is Recording Finished
•
There is a Filter for Shows Are HD
•
Actions are:
o
Transcode to WMV in the folder TV with the profile WMV7 HD
o
Switch To the Result of Transcode to WMV
o
Export Item to folder Export
In this case, when a recording is completed, if the recording is HD, it will be transcoded to WMV using the settings specified, and then the transcoded file will be exported.
If we wanted to then delete the original file, we could then switch the target back to the original recording, as shown here:
Chains of action like this can also be created using multiple workflows; the Switch To feature simply allows multiple steps to be combined into a single Workflow.
